Wedding vs. Marriage: More Than Just a Day
By Minister Leonardo I. Candelario Jr.
A Joyful Beginning
Who doesn’t love a wedding? The music, celebration, beautiful dresses, and laughter of loved ones—it’s a day many dream about and plan for months or years.
But a wedding is only one day. Marriage is the true journey—a lifetime commitment rooted in God’s design.
Understanding the Difference
A wedding is the ceremony and celebration. Marriage is the ongoing commitment to love, serve, and grow together.
Many couples focus so much on planning the perfect wedding day that they forget to prepare their hearts for the marriage that follows.
Marriage: God’s Covenant
Marriage is not a human invention. It’s a sacred covenant created by God. Malachi 2:14 says:
“The Lord has been witness between you and the wife of your youth… she is your companion and your wife by covenant.”
This covenant is a solemn promise witnessed by God—a bond of love and faithfulness meant to last.
What the Bible Teaches About Marriage
1 Corinthians 7:3–4 speaks of mutual love and respect. Paul urges husbands and wives to serve one another selflessly.
Jesus teaches in Matthew 19:6:
“What God has joined together, let not man separate.”
These scriptures call us to honor and protect the marriage covenant.
Marriage Reflects the Gospel
Ephesians 5:25 compares a husband’s love for his wife to Christ’s love for the Church—a sacrificial, forgiving love.
When lived according to God’s design, marriage becomes a powerful witness to God’s love.
Keeping God at the Center
Challenges will come. But when couples invite God into their marriage, their bond grows stronger. Ecclesiastes 4:12 reminds us:
“A threefold cord is not quickly broken.”
God is the third strand in your marriage, making it unbreakable.
Final Thoughts
Your wedding day is a beautiful start. But marriage is a lifelong journey where God teaches you to love like Him, build a godly family, and shine His light.
